One Room Challenge || Week 5. Daughter's Study/Play Room

GeeGee-Collins-Art.jpg

Welcome back for the One Room Challenge's Week 5 (you can see Week 1 here and Week 2 here and week 3 here and Week 4 here!!)  I am re-designing my daughter's play room/study room this time around.  One more week left!  This last week I will be putting it all together, styling and photographing.  I'm really excited about the changes.

I'm thrilled to be participating as a Guest Participant in the One Room Challenge. If you are not familiar with it The One Room Challenge was started by Linda from Calling it Home some years ago where she lines up twenty very talented featured designers to redo a room in just six weeks.  They share their progress every Wednesday.  And the Guest Participants (anyone can join!) report their progress on Thursdays.  So, today is Week 5 of the spring One Room Challenge journey.  A few major things happened this week- the bookcase got installed, the art arrived, rug pad arrived, the chandy was painted......we are in pretty good shape!

The art is so good!  Originally, I wasn't planning on getting any new pieces for this space and was rather going to recycle art I had around the house but as different opportunities arose I had to take advantage.  The artists in this room are all favorites and am honored to have them in my home.  The most exciting part is that my daughter loves all these pieces so much.  Let me show you what we have.

The striped piece above is by one of my favorite artists GeeGee Collins.  I'm in love with it! The colors, the style! Everything!  It is perfect for the space because it gives the room a sense of excitement and freshness. It pairs beautifully with the chartreuse womb chair.  I already own one of her pieces (this one here) which used to sit in my office but now have decided to put in this room as well because it goes perfectly! GeeGee's work is bright and minimal and has that whimsical quality that is exactly what this room needed.  Aside from talented GeeGee is the sweetest person and has such a warm heart.  I have never met her but feel like we are old friends.  And you know what the title of the painting is? Portofino Stripes!  Which could not be more fitting because Portofino is one of our family's most favorite places in the world so it is coincidentally perfect!

These two pieces below are from the fabulous Katie Craig.  I have worked with her before as she did a beautiful piece for me for my closet One Room Challenge.  I have met Katie as she lives nearby and just adore her.  Her pieces are on paper so I floated them inside white frames and am very happy with how they look. Working with both GeeGee and Katie was such a pleasure! I sent them photographs of fabrics I was using and then they worked their magic to create these beauties.

Remember Angela Chrusciaki Blehm's mini ribbon I styled in our library here? Well, I'm happy to report that it found a permanent place in my daughter's play room as well.  My daughter had been obsessed with it ever since it arrived so I knew she was going to end up with it because as you know I have my own already, so of course she wanted her own.

We are so very lucky to have these fabulous artists decorating our home and making it such a special place.  I feel like art is really the soul of any space. If you like these artists you will love this post on my favorite 17 (accessible) artists to know.

Another very important piece of information I want to share with you is about my new rug pad!  I know most probably don't give a second thought to rug pads but a good quality one is of supreme importance if you care about maintaining your floor beneath and your rug in good condition.  The best source I have found is Rugpad USA.  I blogged about their amazing quality rug pads before here. They have eco-friendly products, manufactured here in the US. Additionally, they can even be custom cut to fit your rug specifications at no extra charge. The quality is really good and now it kind of feels like I'm walking on a cloud when I step on this rug, plus it will be so comfortable to sit on it and play board games or watch movies.  Rugpad USA has a very helpful chart to help you pick the best rug pad for you whether you are using it on a hardwood floor, tile or linoleum floor. Take a look at the quality and the thickness-

If you are in the market for a new rug pad I have a treat for you.  If you use code MIMOSALANE at checkout they will receive an additional 5% off your order (I know it doesn’t sound like much, but everything is currently marked down 15-20% off so the total savings would be 20-25%). The code will be valid for two weeks and will expire on May 17th.

Another very exciting and important piece is that the main feature of the room is in!! Our very own very bright blue bookcase! The color is Sherwin Williams Danube (SW 6803). It's bright but it is a good middle blue. Boy, did this take forever to clean!  There was dust everywhere.

The pretty and inexpensive knobs are from MyKnobs.com I love them! and love the mix between the round and the handles.

Originally, I had wanted to keep the Stray Dog Designs chandy in the original color turquoise, but the difference in the blues was really bothering me.  They have a beautiful navy blue color on their website that I thought would look more elegant and appropriate in this space so I gave them a call and they were so helpful!  They gave me the name of the color I wanted (Benjamin Moore Downpour Blue) and the type of paint (water-based!) that I needed to make the change! YES!

Here it is during it's transformation! A little bit more to go.....

There you have it!!  We are in the final stretch! I have some finishing touches to do.  I'm very intimidated about the bookshelf styling.  It's a big one.   Stay tuned! Here is my checklist from the first day. Styling and accessorizing is the only thing left to do!  I've got this!

  • DONE. new bookcase

  • DONE. new fabric for shades and ottoman cubes. We need to think of color schemes that can work with the existing turquoise/light blue in here. My daughter has shown interest in wanting a blue and white space, which I like. A LOT. So this may very well be the direction we go in.

  • DONE. new pillows for sofa

  • DONE. Arrived! nicer lounge chair

  • DONE! moved another desk in which we had in our family room. take a look at desk situation

  • DONE. take a look at table lamp situation

  • DONE. re-evaluate the art

  • style and accessorize.
